When we are preoccupied with the everyday concerns of life it is easy to forget to look up and discover what God is doing around us. National and international concerns, local issues, and familial problems can consume our attention and our energy, but John calls us back to the basics. He calls us to turn from things that lead us away from God and to face those things that awaken us to God's activities.
I don't believe that when we are focussed on God that things can't go wrong, but I do know that God can bring good out of bad. I do know that God accompanies us through the good times and the bad ones. This is God's way...to always come to us wherever we are. That is God's history with humankind. God always comes to us and offers God's love and forgiveness. This is a comfort to me and I hope it is a comfort to you. The Christmas celebration is about God coming "in the flesh" to show us in a very personal way what God's love is truly like. Merry Christmas!
